Census Data Coming Soon

The US Census Bureau announced on Tuesday that the public will get its first glimpse of detailed 2010 Census data on Wednesday, March 16. We will be covering the demographic changes since 2000 in our area and analyzing the effects on redistricting in coming days and weeks.

Based on previous estimates, we know that the SD's population has grown significantly in the southern reaches of the district, principally Sherburne County. Princeton, mostly in Mille Lacs County, has also benefited from this growth. Outside of the US-10 corridor, populations have grown more slowly.

This matches the broader picture of growth in the suburban and exurban ring of the Twin Cities, including southern SD16, and slower growth or graying decline in northern Minnesota.

These changes will dramatically shift the boundaries of our district; growth in Sherburne County may make it a feasible stand-alone district, leaving Mille Lacs County and the eastern sections of Benton and Morrison Counties up for grabs. Whether they are joined to the rest of the Mille Lacs Lake area and Mora or sliced-and-diced between Little Falls and Cambridge is to be seen.

Watch for more information and analysis as it becomes available.
